Going Green ~ Tips and Guidelines
By Nony Morgan of Holistic Wellness Consultant
Going green means assessing what we consume or use in our lives, and making a commitment to reduce the impact of our ecological footprint. Following are some basic guidelines to help carry out a commitment to living green: 1. Improve energy efficiency in your home. * Turn lights off when you leave a room. * Replace regular light bulbs with low-energy compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), since 80% of the energy used by incandescent lighting is wasted through heat. 2. Reduce or eliminate the use of paper napkins and paper towels. The Seventh Generation company estimates that if every household in the U.S. replaced just one roll of 120 ct. virgin fiber paper towels with 100% recycled ones, we could save: * more than 900,000 trees * 2.4 million cubic feet of landfill space * 350 million gallons of water - a years supply for 2,700 families of four 3. Reduce catalog mailings and junk mail. * You can have your name removed from unwanted mailing lists by registering at the Direct Marketing Association website. * To eliminate unwanted catalogs, register here. 4. Carry your own mug and water bottle instead of using disposable paper, plastic or styrofoam cups. More than 26 billion plastic bottles are thrown away every year. 5. Avoid the use of plastic bags when you go shopping - bring your own reusable grocery bags. Globally, it's estimated that 4 billion plastic bags end up as litter each year. 6. Reduce your purchase of 'stuff', since it takes a lot of energy to produce and transport. Watch this enlightening video: The Story of Stuff 7. Use natural cleaners and other household products with environmentally safe ingredients. Make a conscious effort to commit to living green and encourage someone else to join the green living revolution. |

Great advise and a good read, Nony. Thank you for sharing. Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick
Hi, Nony. I have replaced a lot of different commercial products with three common household ingredients that are inexpensive, very effective, and much greener than the products a lot of people I know use. They are hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, and baking soda. I use them to clean and disinfect food and household surfaces and even for personal use. That is sort of green *BIG SMILE*

Hi Janet - That sounds great. How about writing an intel on the uses of those ingredients and how you mix them up (i.e. proportion to water etc.)
